There are several different ways you can use to grill on a fire pit, but this is the best way it can be done. Eventually, you’ll want to learn how to build your own fire pit if you don’t have one already for many reasons. The first reason is that there are so many fun things you can do around a fire pit that you couldn’t do if you’re not using one. Second, it is very easy to cook on, and I’ll show you how in the following article.

How To Grill On a Fire Pit!

The best thing you can grill on a fire pit is food. However, you can’t grill anything, even meat. It requires some thinking and preparation. Meats that are good to use with fire pits are:

  • Steak (the oven can be used also)
  • Chicken (the oven can be used also)
  • Fish (can be done the same way as steaks but make sure you keep it moist!)

Other foods can also be done on fire pits, but they aren’t as common. Some ideas are:

  • Bread (it is ok to do if you’re careful)
  • Pie (make sure it is made with ingredients that don’t burn easily!)
  • Cookies/Cake (just like pie)

There are many more types of food that can be used on fire pits, but these are some of the most common and easy to make.

How To Grill Chicken On a Fire Pit?

Step 1: Make sure you have a fire pit!

Now that you know what food can be done on fire, you need to make sure that YOU have one. This is the most important step of doing anything on a fire pit! If you don’t have one, learn how to build one here. It might take a little while to learn, but it is well worth your time to do so.

Step 2: Make sure you have the right utensils!

Make sure that you don’t just go into this thinking that fire pits are an easy way to cook food. This isn’t the case at all, and you need the correct utensils in order for it to work correctly.

For fish: You’ll need a fish grill. They come in all shapes and sizes, and some even come with grills built in! Just make sure you don’t use wood next to your fish while it’s cooking (not even if it’s hot).

For the chicken: You can just cook it on the metal grate that probably came with your grill. Make sure you put a lid on it while cooking or else you’ll have some serious fire on your hands!

For the steak: Again, just use the grate that came with your grill. It is recommended to add a small amount of wood for flavor if desired. For the bread: You can place a skillet over the pit, but make sure you have it right next to where the fire is. Also, use tongs because it will be extremely hot!

For the pie: Just place the pie tin directly on top of your pit and let it cook until done. You can actually do this for almost anything that doesn’t require flipping or much attention.

Step 3: Make sure you follow your watch!

This is very important because you can burn your food if you cook too long. Make sure that the meat has an internal temperature of at least 15 degrees lower than what it should be before taking it off of the fire pit to cool for a few minutes. If not, don’t eat it and just let it cook more.

Step 4: Enjoy your food!

After following all of these steps, you’ll notice that cooking on a fire pit isn’t as easy as it might seem (and I didn’t even mention how dangerous it can be!) It takes some skill and patience to cook like this but it’s completely worth the time if you have the right utensils. If you have any questions about how to grill on a fire pit, feel free to comment below and I’ll answer them as soon as possible.

Cleaning a fire pit after grilling:

As soon as you’re done grilling, remove everything from the fire pit and wash it. Also, make sure that if you used a lid while cooking on it, take that off also! If not the condensation will drip back onto your meat and make it soggy. This is a very bad thing when grilling on a fire pit!

Grill On a Wood Fire Pit vs Propane Fire Pit

This is ultimately up to the individual. It is simply a question of what you want out of your experience.. If you prefer convenience and ease over authenticity, then go with the propane fire pit! However, if you’re looking for a more real-life experience, go with wood! It is very interesting cooking on either of these types of fire pits.

A lot of people are curious about how to grill on propane fire pits because it is somewhat difficult. It isn’t as easy as when you use a traditional grill because you need to make sure that all of the utensils you use are long enough to not burn. If you’re using a metal grate, just make sure that it’s high above the heat and far away from it (about 8-9 inches).

If you don’t like the idea of cooking over an open flame, getting a propane fire pit is also very beneficial! If you want to cook something on the ground but you don’t particularly want to grill it, just place a large skillet over it! Just keep in mind that it does get quite hot. Try cooking things like steak or chicken pieces at varying times so they all come out done perfectly without burning anything. If you live in an apartment of some sort, you can also use a propane fire pit inside.
